On equipping managers to be better managers

Gallup\’s State of the Global Workplace report is out. It\’s a sobering read. They argue that the world\’s GDP is going down which will make it more difficult to solve the challenges we are currently facing on a global basis.

They quote The World Bank\’s Chief Economist, Indermit Gill \”𝗔 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥’𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 — 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘣𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘺, 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦.”

Here\’s the thing though. Gallup says that this problem is fixable – and quite easily. If we manage people differently than we have in the past.

They say, \”𝘸𝘦 𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺 $8.8 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 9% 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘋𝘗 — 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺.\”

They have found that training managers to be better managers has resulted in an increase in employee engagement for their teams from 8 – 18%. That\’s significant.

And a bottom line savings to organizations, because they also estimate that you lose up to 1/3 of someone\’s productivity if they are disengaged.

So yes, equipping managers to be better managers is important – but it\’s also important to promote people based on their ability and willingness to spend the time managing people well.

𝗜𝘁\’𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲.
